5 effective ways for teachers to your teaching practice English poetry

English poetry for non-English majors: This theme seems intimidating, you, the homeschooling parents.

As a homeschooling mother, a Bachelor of Arts degree in English earned / creative writing, I know I’d be intimidated if I had to teach my son biology. So allow me a few secrets that I learned of my passion for understanding and reading poems. And surely you will be able to teach the subject effectively. Here are five ideas to get you started:

1)    Use a mixture of fun and seriousness.

John Milton, Paradise Lost, who wrote, can very seriously. Balance Milton English with a little poetry fun. Really, they are there! William Blake is a great source of interesting poems, particularly his poem that begins “Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright”. “If you expand your lessons with poetry, American poets like Robert Frost and Walt Whitman. These are the classical poets, the great influence on this great genre!

2)    Start chronologically and in relation to history.

My favorite English poem Beowulf is to start with. Yes, it is very difficult to understand because it is written in Old English, which can be done but with a good translation, though. This gives your students an appreciation of Western civilization and linguistics and history.

It is a way to read and understand a poem. It really is a bit like studying the Bible! Finding appropriate measures, you learn yourself, and learn from your study time. Make sure you understand literary concepts such as metaphor, comparison, iambic pentameter, etc. The Internet is full of wonderful resources, so that a solid foundation in the vocabulary, which enable you and your card Excel student understanding of English poetry.

4)    Let your students explore poetry for themselves.

Include some time in your lesson plans for writing poetry. So your students write a sonnet. Learn about all the literary terms are one thing, but it is always instructive to apply it by composing a poem itself.

5)    Ask your students to write essays of comparison.

Comparison of Milton’s Allegro and Il Penseroso poems is a great lesson in education. It really makes a student in depth and finds the meaning in the poems. Plus, your students learn and apply skills and essay writing. It is a lesson in college, something my teacher told us in our class of English poetry.
