Eponyms in medicine today – anachronism or reality?

An eponym is a word derived from a name of a person. Medicine is fields where eponyms are especially abundant and we like it or not, they need something medical professionals are less familiar. Whether it is a common requirement for a doctor, who described for the first time, or a rare disease with the unfortunate name of the first person called to suffer, eponyms are here to occupy us.

While the number of eponyms of modern medical science can be overwhelming, a legitimate question to ask whether this is really necessary or should we ends this phenomenon. And like others, non-homonymous names of many of the same conditions do not exist, why do we keep this ancient tradition?

There are several reasons for this. For once, are eponyms, generally shorter than their non-namesake? He takes much less time to fight against a new formation, as Evans to define tumors as fibromyxoid sarcoma of low grade. If a standard sufficient to include both names in publications, would be in daily practice with just the name of transmitting all the necessary information.

Secondly, there is a group of common conditions, the same names are so deep in both medical practice and everyday life, and it is difficult to imagine that they are rooted in the foreseeable future. Crohn’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome are likely to be designated as such in the foreseeable future.

There is also, unlike the previous group, as opposed to a series of obscure esoteric same conditions with only a handful of cases each described so far. It will probably remain so, even if for reasons entirely contrary to the previous group. Most practicing doctors are probably not a case of Devriendt syndrome encountered during his career. If they do, however, offers the same name fast and easy point of reference.

Last but not least, there is a small subset of conditions, defined only by its very name, Ewing’s sarcoma as the most notable example.

It is therefore prudent to conclude that the eponyms remain here as a nuisance to some and a path to immortality to others.
