History of titanium found
Many know of titanium, a metal of the space age that has many applications rage aircraft parts for surgical implants. But only a few remember that the people who discovered it – William Gregor. Come with me we are in the season, traveling Gregor.
Born December 25, 1761 in Trewarthenick, Cornwall, England, Greg was the son of Francis Gregor and Mary Copley. He was educated at Bristol Grammar School and developed an interest in chemistry. Later, he entered St. John’s College, one of the colleges at Cambridge University, where he received his BA in 1784 and his MA in 1787. In 1790 he married Charlotte Anne Gwatkin with her daughter.
Gregor discovery of Titan took place in 1791. At that time, he was a mineralogist and pastor of Creed, a village in Cornwall. It was from the black sands (limonite), he lost in a creek in the nearby village Manaccan. The analysis of the sand, he learned he had two metallic oxides – iron oxide (which explains why the sand was attracted by a magnet) and a white metal, he could not see. He called this unknown metal “manaccanite” and reported this to the Royal Society of Geology of Cornwall and the German scientific journal Annals of Crell.
Click Here!Around the same time was the German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth, the same unknown metal in the ore rutile. It’s called “Titan” after the Titans of Greek mythology. If Klaproth learned about the earlier discovery of Gregor, he obtained a sample of manaccanite and found that it also contained titanium. Klaproth, however, indicate the name and the new titanium metal has been called since.
Today you can find nothing in titanium aircraft, rockets, dental implants, sporting goods, jewelry, mobile phones and spacecraft. When combined or alloyed with other metals, titanium can produce solid materials that are lightweight and Dent and corrosion resistant. Titanium is also used in the manufacture of firearms, especially pistols and revolvers cylinder bundles. Some artists even count on the titanium to produce sculptures and furniture. Discovery of Gregor has certainly made a big difference in our lives.
