Now on sale: Synology DiskStation DS212j, NAS of 2-bay economic
The specialist units attached storage Synology today announced the launch of a new model in its line of NAS devices, the Synology DiskStation DS212j, an interesting storage server with Gigabit dual bay, media server and low power consumption at a relatively attractive, highly accessible interface easy to use. The housing of this NAS is designed taking into consideration the home or office, and looks very elegant as well as pleasant, with two vents for a more efficient cooling with a 92 mm rear fan that helps the task of the unit by removing the hot air. The Synology DiskStation DS212j inside can accommodate two HDDs of 2.5 or 3.5-inch Serial ATA II, and features a powerful 1.2GHz processor unit, along with 256MB of RAM that will control the delivery system. A Gigabit Ethernet port and two USB 2.0 connectivity complete the section on creating a dual interface through which access to the units installed within the NAS.

One of the most striking details of the NAS is not performance, but by no means is a negative, but the very low noise in operation, with only 18.3dBA noise when connected and the large fan is located on operation. Synology also wanted to focus on another very important and often forgotten in these devices, energy consumption, which this time falls within a 17.6W at full load and low only a mere 5.5 W mode power hibernation. Like all connected storage disks of the firm, this Synology DiskStation DS212j includes proprietary operating system DS Manager, a new version 3.2, with a more intuitive interface via web browser. Storage, backups, web server, FTP or print and even multimedia streamer are some of the interesting features of this device, especially useful as a primary drive to store all types of files if you have multiple computers or use a laptop with we move.
On the negative side, although I understand that this is a device for a bit tight budgets, I am struck by the absence of new 6Gbps Serial ATA III, which would double the potential bandwidth of the drives installed and you have chosen to include USB 2.0 ports, instead of resorting to a newer USB 3.0 controller, which will undoubtedly make it more interesting device. Synology DiskStation DS212j launches and this which will be available soon at most specialty shops with an estimated retail price of 170 €. In these times when the Synology DiskStation DS212j price of hard drives continues to rise uncontrollably, perhaps a good idea to stock up a few Terabytes, “just in case.”
